She panics and bites her father's hand, drawing blood. However, Haishi is a child and doesn't understand. He's not really trying to kill her but must pretend to. He begins to explain to her why they are tormenting the mermaid. Haishi's father is heartsick about what he is doing. The uncles leap into the sea to harvest the newly made pearls.Īt this point everything goes wrong. But then Haishi's father begins to kill her and the mermaid weeps. Haishi's father then pulls her up and the mermaid surfaces to watch the girl reach safety. The mermaid appears as expected and she touches Haishi, blessing her. The fishermen want to harvest the tears of a mermaid, which turn into Naga pearls (Luminescent Pearls). Mermaids are considered to be immortals and have magical powers. They tie a rope to her and drop her into the water to attract a mermaid (also known as "Dragon Tail" in the translations). Haishi's father and his brothers take her out to sea. If they can't produce enough pearls the soldiers burn their villages and sell the people into slavery in a neighboring realm (Hanzhou). The local officials are corrupt and the soldiers they send to collect the tax from fishing villages threaten and abuse the villagers. When she is 12 years old her people are struggling to pay a pearl tax to the emperor. The lead character is a girl, Ye Hai Shi (spelled Ye Haishi in the English subtitles), who lives in a fishing village on the coast in a kingdom/empire called Dazheng (which is the same empire called Dayin in Novoland: Eagle Flag). Violence and bloodshed are where the most "adult themes" are developed in Chinese drama. ![]() Chinese dramas are produced according to very conservative standards compared to western entertainment, so you won't see much skin. That said, the show is well written for male audiences to appreciate. I don't know if this show would appeal to feminists in western audiences, but it's definitely pulled in a huge female fan base. And the show's lead character is also a woman. ![]() First, the directors and screenwriter for whom I could find Englsh-language credits are all women. This adaptation is unusual (in my limited Chinese drama experience) for several reasons. I've read a few spoilers so I have an idea of how it may end but for once I don't want to know all the details in advance. So I'm still a bit behind the curve on this one and as I write this I am only up to episode 38. Novoland: Pearl Eclipse was released late last year and I only just began watching it recently. It was not the first dramatic adaptation from the stories, but it was the first one I was able to watch. I reviewed Novoland: Eagle Flag in March 2021. They defined a world with 3 continents and a 10,000 year history. Novoland was developed in the early 2000s by 7 famous Chinese Web authors to be the "Chinese Lord of the Rings" world, in response to the Peter Jackson movies.
